Northern Crab Spider (Mecaphesa asperata)
These spiders are generalist predators that hide out in flowers and prey on various insects. Some web sources will claim they are villains who will take out the pollinator population. This has not been true in our gardens. They have been a wonderful biologic control, keeping our flowers from being nibbled by pesky beetles, aphids, and leafhoppers. Yes, they are capable of eating bees and they may have snagged a few here and there over the season, but I would be shocked to see these tiny spiders negatively impact the beneficial pollinator population. Tons of native and honey bees continue to pollinate our flowers, paying little mind to these very small hunters.
